About Atlanta

Atlanta, GA is nestled right in the middle of the Southeast of America where a couple of hours drive in nearly any direction will find you in a new state. Whether you go to Buckhead for shopping, Downtown Atlanta for dining, Little Five Points or an eclectic area or nearby Stone Mountain for the outdoors and historical aspects, there is always something to do. If none of that is of interest to you, you can always watch one of the three professional sports teams in the area; Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta Braves. Atlanta is also home to several universities including Georgia State University and Georgia Institute of Technology.

Fun Facts

  • Atlanta was originally named Terminus and Marthasville (the latter for Governor Wilson Lumpkin’s daughter.) Eventually the city got its current name from J Edgar Thompson, a railroad engineer. Most people think it is a shortened version of “Atlantica-Pacifica”
  • The city of Atlanta's symbol is the Phoenix after it was burnt to the ground by General Sherman. This was the only time a US City was destroyed as an act of war
  • Atlanta's airport, Hartsfield-Jackson-Atlanta International Airport, is the world's busiest airport and is roughly the size of 45 football fields
  • There was a time that it was illegal to tie a giraffe to a telephone pole or to stick an ice cream cone in your back pocket
  • Atlanta is the fifth city to be considered the capital of Georgia. Previous cities that were under this distinction were Savannah, Augusta, Louisville and Milledgeville
